When Trump was elected, how did you feel? Sad? Scared? Enraged?
As a survivor, it is so dehumanizing to see an abuser be given so much power. I wept for days.
Like you, I was heartbroken that so many people in our country have so little regard for women, people of color, immigrants, low-income communities, etc. Under his influence we have seen abortion access slashed, more mass shootings than ever in history, immigrant children dying in detention centers, and we’ve seen the president promoting hate and ignorance.
My grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, died two years ago at 96. Before he died, he saw Trump come to power, and he said it reminded him of Europe just before the Holocaust.
As a kid, when I listened to his stories about fighting in the resistance, and being captured, and losing his whole family, I wondered what type of person I would be in that situation. If I saw that kind of oppression, would I rise up against it or conform out of fear? The time of wondering is over. This is when I find out who I am.
Turns out, I'm a resistor, just like my grandfather, but I need your help to carry on his memory and to take our country back!
When Trump was elected, did you give up? Did you feel like going into hiding?
Now is the time for you to stand up for freedom! To fiercely love our country. When Trump was elected, I decided to use my voice as a musician and artist to fight back and I've done so by becoming much more political in my music, my shows and in my art. Now, every time I'm on stage, I talk about ending mass incarceration, immigrant detention, and rape culture.
I have run benefit concerts that raised awareness and thousands of dollars to combat the sickness in our culture that Trump prays upon and amplifies.
What are you doing to stand up for what’s right?
You might not be someone who can get on stage, and reach thousands of people with your message on social media, but you can help resist by joining my patron community to help me make songs that transform our culture for the better.
But how does you joining this community help fight injustice?
I am launching a new project in which I am writing songs in collaboration with my patrons. I will provide a social or political topic, about one a month, and ask you to share your thoughts and experiences. I will use your words to write the song. These songs will be more powerful with diverse representation. I am offering free trials so that anyone can join for one month - because, while it is important that I be able to make my art and make a living, it is also important that my art is accessible. You can join without fear because I will send you several reminders before billing starts at the end of the trial.
Make revolutionary art with me!
Every level comes with inclusion in the songwriting project.
